The Pals of Pal Dhaba

The Pal Dhaba in Sector 28, Chandigarh was first introduced to me by my former boss in my former company, where I was formerly National Manager, selling journals, which apparently continues to be my current job too. Chandigarh has always had some state of the art research institutes. And as sales people for journals, we have had the good fortune of visiting them. Chandigarh is indeed the city beautiful.

The Pal Dhaba started out as a small eatery, where chicken is bathed in desi ghee and dal in pure butter. It is one of the most astounding places for a true vegetarian to ask for a lunch menu of 2 chapattis and one plate mutton curry, without the mutton, or chicken curry without the chicken pieces – as the mood may be – on that sweltering afternoon. The vegetarians who are a bit fussy about sticking to the flora, there is enough fanfare too.

Although this has met with a very discerning “tch… tch” from me; I would still secretly agree with my very able sales colleagues’ views of “everything here is good, lets abduct the chef/chefs.” I and my fellow sales people have had some fantastic rendezvous here.

The Pal has a place for all kinds of visiting sales people and others too. Sometimes, when our travel allowance has allowed, we have even eaten in the AC Hall. I am made to believe that they wash the steel plates with extra soapy water; the servers, however, are the same though – dirty vests clad, turbaned lads, who efficiently throw food-laden “steel” plates on our desks and have the arms of a well-trained Frisbee athlete, capable of making the chapattis land directly under your nose.

Please do wash hands before you sit down to eat; it’s lip smacking, finger lickin’, finger chompin’ good!

     A must try!

The 60th International Library Association Conference

On 8-10th April 2015, Taylor & Francis attended the ILA Conference at Punjab University, Chandigarh. This year, the conference celebrated its diamond jubilee with the theme, Embedded Librarianship and the Technological Challenges in the Digital Age. The conference aimed to focus on the challenges and future of a library in the e-environment and the new technological innovations in librarianship today. Over 450 librarians from across the country attended the conference.

We gave a presentation on Social Media in Academic Libraries - Challenges and Opportunities & won the best presentation award both in terms of content as well as delivery. We were presented with a special gesture trophy for the invited speaker at the ILA. The content of this presentation was in sync with the key note address of Dr Jagdish Arora, Director of INFLIBNET, as he spoke about how libraries and librarians today need to ensure that they move with the times and use digital mediums to touch base with their users.
