Bruce
Alberts, a prominent biochemist with a strong commitment to the improvement of
science and mathematics education, was awarded the National Medal of Science by
President Barack Obama in 2014. He is now the Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in
Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education at the University of
California, San Francisco, to which he returned after serving two six-year
terms as the president of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Most recently
in India, he was presented with Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Award for Environment
Protection 2015 in Chennai! While in Chennai, to receive the award, Sankar (Sr. territory Manager)
and the Books Marketing team had organized an Author Talk in Anna University
Chennai. This was followed by an editorial workshop by Renu Upadhyay – Assistant
commissioning editor (seen here in the photo with Dr Albert).
While in our office,
he interacted with our colleagues from Sales, marketing and editorial and
explained the way science is taught (and learned) across nations. He shared his
desire to explore and to learn the mysteries of the cell and bring the student
along on their journey of discovery. These are the qualities that Dr. Alberts
embodies and disseminates throughout the world!

It was exciting and motivating to meet Bruce Alberts the co-author of our bestselling book (we sell 5000 copies in India!). He talked to us about the making of the book and the centrality of his publisher, Denise Schank of Garland Science, in both its making and its success. Bruce was very patient with our requests for autographs (see the signed mug in the blog) and photo ops.
The lady with him in the photo posted, for those of you who don’t know her yet, is Renu Upadhayay our CRC Life Sciences editor. She has been nominated by Bruce to teach us some science! She can get some support from the other new science postgraduate in our midst, V Harini from the J Crosscheck team.
Bruce agreed to our request to record a short video on the new edition of the book for promotional purposes and he did so wearing an Indian kurta bought for him by our two intrepid gift buyers, Dimple and Michele. I would request Abhishek Bhardwaj, who is currently editing the video, to show it to all of us on a suitable occasion. I should also mention that Bruce really loved our offices (a natural reaction of all first-time visitors :)) and mentioned its uncanny resemblance to the TNF offices in New York. ‘Did you use the same designer?’ he queried a confused Abhishek!
Well I really felt honored, to be present there and be a part of this meeting with Dr. Alberts. What followed was an intriguing discussion on the birth and the development of this famous book MBOC currently at its 6th edition which he calls as the “Big Book”.
A very slow and soft speaker and he was very keen to listen more on what we do to sell his book in our Indian market and how different it is from the US market. He was also open to ideas of innovative selling like the one Abhishek is currently working upon.
Wish we could have more such high profile authors visiting our office...
